<description>The Black Harbor is an online account of the work, ideas, and inspiration of a tight-nit collective of creatives. Over the years we have created things together, attended school together, fought together, and partied together. We have grown beyond the simplicity of friendship. We are now a family. Our purpose is to celebrates the work of the collective and explore creative work in the world that truly inspires us driving us to be better at what we do. Our hope is that as we document our work, process, lives, and inspiration that you will also be inspired and share your work with us.</description>

<p><a href="http://ofpompandcircumstance.tumblr.com/">Gigi</a> is an enigma. We met last year through a mutual friend on a photo shoot she was doing the hair for. I had been hearing about her from the time I moved back to Bim. Since our first meeting we&#8217;ve collaborated on a few projects, but only end up seeing each other every 3 months or so. That&#8217;s hard to imagine since she works in my neighborhood and our island is exceptionally tiny.  But when we do link it&#8217;s always a special time.</p>

<p>The iconic 20th century British Photographer <a href="http://www.eohoppe.com/">E.O. Hoppé</a> (1878 &#8211; 1972) came to my attention last winter during a layover in London. I made sure to hunt down a copy of his most recent monograph while loitering in a <del>local book shop </del> giant bookstore off of Trafalgar Square after seeing posters for his upcoming retrospective.</p>
<p>The story goes that Hoppé sold his archive to the London Picture Gallery in 1954, only to have his work misfiled among millions of random stock images.  It remained forgotten and untouched until the mid 1990s and soon the decade-long process of digitizing and conservation would be undertaken. <p>I have been a big fan of <a href="http://www.markpeckmezian.com">Mark Peckmezian</a>&#8216;s work for some time now. Like Sarah Wilmer, I found Mark via one of the <a href="http://www.pdnonline.com">PDN </a>30 issues back in &#8217;08/&#8217;09. Since hitting that add contact button, I have awaited the Toronto native&#8217;s uploads to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spassk/">flickr </a>with bated breath.</p>
<p>Mark shoots portraits of friends, acquaintances, strangers, photographers, cosplay girls, artists, models, dogs, cats, and does it well. He is represented by <a href="http://www.stashartists.com/">Stash</a> and<a href="http://www.oborncontemporary.com/"> O&#8217;Born Contemporary Gallery</a>.</p>

Last year they expanded into film with <a href="http://www.pinboardfilm.com">PinboardFilm</a>; A bold foray into music videos, EPK&#8217;s, and documentary films. And would soon form a major partnership with Red Bull UK, beginning with PinboardBlog&#8217;s <em>Rehearsal Room</em> online series in conjunction with <a href="http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/Satellite/en_UK/London-Studio/001242850700298">Red Bull Studios London</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s truly inspiring to see Pinboard&#8217;s growth. Even within the last year. Especially after I had a chance to chat with the two founding members (whaddup Can and Shan!) during my short stay in London back in March.  Check out the embedded videos for some of my favorite Pinboard productions. <object id="RBPlayer" width="616" height="347" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /><param name="wMode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/RedBull/flash/socialmedia/RBPlayer.swf?data_url=http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c%3DRB_Video%26cid%3D1243079212349%26locale%3D1237404256307%26p%3D1242779823141%26pagename%3DRedBullUK%2FRB_Video%2FVideoPlayerDataXML&amp;quality=low&amp;on_redbull=yup&amp;primary_up_color=0xDD013F&amp;primary_over_color=0x0C2044&amp;primary_down_color=0x0C2044&amp;secondary_up_color=0xDD013F&amp;secondary_over_color=0x0C2044&amp;secondary_down_color=0x0C2044&amp;num_analytics_intervals=5" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed id="RBPlayer" width="616" height="347" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/RedBull/flash/socialmedia/RBPlayer.swf?data_url=http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c%3DRB_Video%26cid%3D1243079212349%26locale%3D1237404256307%26p%3D1242779823141%26pagename%3DRedBullUK%2FRB_Video%2FVideoPlayerDataXML&amp;quality=low&amp;on_redbull=yup&amp;primary_up_color=0xDD013F&amp;primary_over_color=0x0C2044&amp;primary_down_color=0x0C2044&amp;secondary_up_color=0xDD013F&amp;secondary_over_color=0x0C2044&amp;secondary_down_color=0x0C2044&amp;num_analytics_intervals=5" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" wMode="transparent" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" /></object></p>

<p>Charles Paulicevich a.k.a. <a href="http://www.bruxellescapitales.com">Bruxelles Capitales</a> came to my attention via <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/charlespaulicevich">flickr</a> last year. I made sure to reach out to Charles before heading over to Europe&#8217;s capital city in January. I spent 5 years of my childhood in Brussels and prior to my visit had only returned once for a couple of weeks back in &#8217;03. On this trip I was hoping to experience the Brussels found within his images, but came up short.</p>
<p>The inhabitants of this complex city are Bruxelles Capitales&#8217; focus. The French-born, Brussels-residing photographer presents his unique take on life within the city limits. The following images  present a version of Brussels I have yet to experience. <a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-282.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6889" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-282-619x412.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="412" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-4.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6896" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-4-619x412.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="412" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-6.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6898" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-6-619x413.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="413" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-242.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6885" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-242-619x403.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="403" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-232.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6884" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-232-619x412.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="412" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-292.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6890" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-292-619x408.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="408" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-8.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6895" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-8-619x412.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="412" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-262.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6887" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-262-619x411.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="411" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-31.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6892" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-31-619x417.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="417" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-201.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6881" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-201-619x408.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="408" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/5424337054_934d471a42_b.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6880" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/5424337054_934d471a42_b-619x412.jpg" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="412" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-301.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6891" title="Charles Paulicevich" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Picture-301-619x410.png" alt="Bruxelles Capitales" width="619" height="410" /></a></p>

What began as an experiment a couple days into the new year has taken <a href="http://www.markkingismarkings.com">my work</a> in a fresh direction. I was definitely uneasy about the selective color approach at the onset, but later embraced this methodology since it made me uncomfortable. I had been experimenting with the local plastic shopping bags and their color palette for a while and decided it was time to try a different approach.</p>
<p><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king09.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6530" title="Sheena" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king09-619x722.jpg" alt="Sheena Rose" width="619" height="722" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sheena.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6536" title="Sheena" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sheena-619x556.jpg" alt="Sheena Rose" width="619" height="556" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king12.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6533" title="Alex " src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king12-619x722.jpg" alt="Alex Alleyne" width="619" height="722" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/alex.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6538" title="Alex" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/alex-619x620.jpg" alt="Alex Alleyne" width="619" height="620" /></a> It&#8217;s the wild colors and strange relationships that occur when placed next to each other which, motivates me. Barbados is such a color saturated place. But somehow these Chinese made plastic bags found their way into daily life and manage to stand out in our color dominated society.</p>
<p>Shooting at night and on black and white instant film allows me to focus on designing the frame and provides the foundation for where the colors will live. My subjects represent the inhabitants of this  tinted world. They are often posed with symbols relating to the local culture. The images are taken with a Mamiya RZ 67, scanned, and edited in photoshop. The final crop is made at a 6&#8243;x7&#8243; aspect ratio (final print 12&#8243;x14&#8243;).</p>
<p><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king14.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6535" title="Maryam" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king14-619x722.jpg" alt="Maryam Patel" width="619" height="722" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/maryam.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6550" title="Maryam" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/maryam-619x582.jpg" alt="Maryam Patel" width="619" height="582" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king11.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-6532" title="Adriana" src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mark_king11-619x721.jpg" alt="Adriana" width="619" height="721" /></a><a href="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/adri1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6551" title="Adriana " src="http://theblackharbor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/adri1.jpg" alt="Adriana King" width="600" height="574" /></a></p>
<p>The next phase will involve exploring more of a narrative in the works. I feel there&#8217;s room to also include more people in each shot and push the series in an eerier direction.</p>
