The Black Harbor is an online account of the work, ideas, and inspiration of a tight-nit collective of creatives. Over the years we have created things together, attended school together, fought together, and partied together. We have grown beyond the simplicity of friendship. We are now a family. Our purpose is to celebrates the work of the collective and explore creative work in the world that truly inspires us driving us to be better at what we do. Our hope is that as we document our work, process, lives, and inspiration that you will also be inspired and share your work with us.

Jordan Speer is a young illustrator working in Kentucky. He’s absolutely killing it with these 3d illustrations. I love the almost clay quality of the pieces. Its almost as if these are stills from an epic stop motion film from some Romanian animator in the 70′s that somehow saw the year 2035 in a dream. I’m not even sure if thats a good description (despite the nonsensical nature of it) but how else do you describe these scenes? Either way i’m digging on them, and i’m excited to see more from Jordan in the future.

I’m super excited about the release of Ryan George Kittleman’s novel The Great Peace earlier this week. Ryan is one of those renaissance men who can do just about anything really well. He is an author, musician, and a lawyer for the arts. It was a great pleasure creating the artwork for the book cover. Do yourself a favor and buy the book today! It’s a really fun and funny story that is sure to satisfy your every desire for banana boobs.

The Great Peace is described as:
A small American city is under siege. A group of starving artists- led by a reclusive, sweatpants-wearing billionaire- are determined to overthrow the government by any means necessary. With little hope for peace, a neurotic young gadabout- fresh off a failed suicide attempt- takes it upon himself to save his hometown from ruin. Along the way he encounters revolutionaries, nitwits, weirdos, perverts, dreamers, and something called Danceramics. Humorous, absurd, and often profound, The Great Peace takes on art, politics, philosophy, and class with unflinching verve and wit.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Aza Raskin and his team at Massive Health to help visualize a plethora of data that they had gathered about the way we eat. Their app The Eatery has been helping people eat better by recording and photographing what they eat. The app uses the power of crowd-sourcing to help rate foods, and help us understand how and what we eat. Massive Health is currently working on taking The Eatery to the next level, which from what i’ve seen looks really awesome. These guys are brilliant at what their doing, and (excuse the cliche) The Eatery is only the tip of the iceberg.

As for this specific project. It was a huge undertaking and opportunity for both Massive Health and myself. They were sitting on a treasure trove of health data, and they had an opportunity to share it with the media. The challenge for both of us, was that we had a lot to do and only 7 days to get ready for presentations. This meant: 1 day for data analysis and concepting, 1 day for each of the 5 info-graphics, and 1 day for updates and polishing. Normally, this sort of timing becomes a complaint by the designer, but not in this situation. The Massive Health team, specifically Sylvia Cheng, was right there with me on the sleepless nights and long days. She was crunching data, writing copy, critiqueing designs and god only knows what else. Their dedication t0 the project was a huge inspiration. I don’t think I’ve ever worked side by side with a client like that, and it was awesome.

Below are some examples of the sketches. I wanted to show them because looking back I can’t believe how vague and rough they are. I drew as little as needed to get the idea out, and then we jumped right into the illustrations.

Francisco Miranda is an illustrator and designer based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am particularly excited about the way Francisco is able to explore simple shapes and still create an incredible amount of detail. The piece above and below particularly excel at this balance. If you look at the cars, buildings and streets you can tell that it was made with as few lines and shapes as possible, but at the same time the more you explore the shapes, the more you find adding to the story. Its beautiful and brilliant. Check out more of Francisco’s work here.
