Dear Barbados (Saint Michael, Christ Church, and the other nine parishes), Mark King is a photographer that I knew for about 4 years in San Francisco. He now lives on you. Here are some pictures of you that you might enjoy:
I talked to Mark about living on you, after having lived off of you since he was young.
He described feeling like an outcast. A foreigner on his native land. This comes through in his photography, it’s almost as if he’s an explorer, documenting the people, traditions, and minutiae of a strange land. In this case: you.
When I was on you, over the New Year—2010, I watched him carry his Leica Mini II packed with Kodak Ektar film all over you. Prolific is the only way to describe the number of photographs Mark takes. I think maybe he’s so focused on taking new pictures, he might forget about the gems from the past. But that’s not why I’m writing you this letter.
I’m writing you today, just to let you know, you now have someone living on you who is doing interesting things, and maybe might be the next Rihanna, but as a male photographer with no connection to Jay-Z.
Thanks for the good times Barbados,
Your new friend,
-Dan

Beautiful, hot, slow and somehow bleak, like the salt in the air is corroding more than the machinery. Loved the music set to the video and the movements in the pictures to coincide. Wish you could bring Mark home. He doesn`t fit in there.
My grandparents are Bajans who live here in the UK but are back and forth to Barbados constantly, sometimes I go with them and the country is lovely. I tend to photograph plants but my real passion are the real people. Mark King is kinda of an inspiration.
This is all beautiful and hey maybe i’ll bump in to Mark King himself one day!
Also what is the name of the track you used in the Vimeo video? I love it, so peaceful.
Thanks

Hey, Vabelle!
The song is “Aga Aga (hiromichi mix)” by Jib Kidder, an SF Local. If you like the same music as me you might enjoy my Hype Machine:
