I recently joined The Bold Italic team and have been illustrating stories for writers who go around doing interesting things in SF. The fun part is really the collaboration and getting to create a story within the story. For Paddle Ball I imagined a game for sailors, really really small sailors.  - read it at The Bold Italic

I found these black tack boards a Princeton University after spending hours photographing a lecture hall. I walked outside to feel the colors, lines, and shapes slap me in the face. These are the beginnings of really fun side project I began that afternoon. I could explain my social and anthropological interests in these scraps, but instead I’d rather you just look at the photos. I’m siked and I hope you are too.

This video is an interesting concept. An animated typeface showcased and each individual character shows how it is animated. Its a super fresh way to promote a face. Kudos. The face was created by Calango.

The Black Harbor was privileged enough to sit with Alejandro Chavetta in his garage/studio while he worked on personal work on a coveted Sunday off. Alejandro worked on collage illustrations while we discussed everything from the importance of collaboration to the idea of using the web as a platform for being heard. Below are some of his latest works.

A starburst is a phenomenon where a galaxy undergoes a very rapid and intense period of star formation. It also titles one of the most influential photo exhibitions of the year.

STARBURST: Color Photography in America 1970 – 1980 was curated this year by Kevin Moore and I caught the show two weeks ago at the Princeton University Art Museum. An amazing facility with originals by Warhol and Basquiat, to name a few, the museum was currently hosting a re-production of Steven Shore’s American Surfaces as well as the Starburst exhibition. The collection was brilliant and I was electrified by the presence of much of my favorite works and photographers. New Color embodied visual and conceptual exploration that pushed the seemingly transparency of our medium, and the exhibition catalog insightfully identifies the build-up to and emergence of Post-Chromatic shock and the Neo-Objectivism of the 1990’s and early 2000’s. These trends and ideologies continue to play out today. The book provides an insightful link between the humanistic vocabulary of mid-century American photographs and contemporary photography.

I highly recommend this exhibition and catalog to pretty much anyone even mildly interested in contemporary photography. It provides an excellent foundation for the artistic, social, and political events that have brought us contemporary photography. You can learn more about the exhibition here.

Kansas City Design team MK12 created a super neat video about the possible power that sounds and phenomes have to hide subliminal messages or make a person more receptive to certain thoughts and ideas.  The impact that these “trojan phrases” have are amplified when combined with the technology of the telephone.  The animation, and sound design in this video are fantastic.  Watch the video then check out telephoneme.tv for more info and to download the font they created for the project.

A recent WIRED assignment brought me on a tour of New York City’s trash sucking island. The waste facility on Roosevelt Island is a giant network of tubes that takes garbage from its residential towers and delivers it to one central collection point where it is then compacted and hauled off island. The place is part of a Jetson-y future that never happened but I got the feeling that it just may have been way ahead of it’s time.
