I came across these coffins while doing a project on Voodoo and instantly loved the concept.
The Ga tribe in Ghana believe that the afterlife is a party and a steezy coffin is just the vehicle to get you there. The design of the coffin is meant to reflect the life of the deceased – if you were a beet farmer you can get buried in a giant beet, a sailor inside a ship, a hipster alcoholic in a PBR can. The options are endless…not to mention super cheap at around 400 bucks a pop (including shipping!! whaat?!). Some people custom design their coffin and keep them around for decoration. After you die, you are placed in your Super Coffin and carried away by a sea of people in celebration.
It got me thinking about our culture and how we react to death so differently. And more importantly, how death seems to be a market that could use some really imaginative designers.
